Dusty Miller is a common and reliable annual. It grows best in full sun and dry soils rich in organic material.

Scaevola hybrid
8-14-inches tall.
The flowers are shaped as if they have been horizontally cut in half. Consequently, the generic name means "left-handed" in Latin.

Abutilon hybridum
Although it may be grown outdoors in warmer regions, it is most often grown as a house plant. The flowering maple is not really a maple at all. The Abutilon is also commonly known as a Chinese bellflower or a Chinese lantern.
The blooming season for most Abutilons is from April through June, but they will often flower periodically through the winter as well.

Shade, spring flowering
Pacific Giant polyantha hybrids created from cowslip (Primula veris) and English primrose. Immune to summer heat, these are less than a foot in height. On short, stiff stems, three-inch-wide striking blossoms are in various colors.
